Syros
is the heart of the Cyclades with Tinos and Andros to the north and
Mykonos to the east. The island has a population of about 25.000
inhabitants. It’s coastline forms numerous bays with sandy beaches but
it’s northern part is rather mountainous. Hermoupolis the capital of the
island grew up in an undeveloped area between the foot of Ano Syros and
the sea. It is also known as the “Princess of the Aegean” being the
capital of the Cyclades. It is accessible by ship or plane from Pireaus
and many of Aegean islands. Build in an amphitheatrical way Hermoupolis
comprises of neoclassical buildings, old mansions and white washed
houses on the surrounding hills.
Diogenis Hotel was built in a 19th century building. It has been very
carefully renovated keeping all of the features from it’s neoclassical
form.
